Super Cruise uses a combination of GPS sensing, GPS-enhanced data, a high-precision LiDAR-derived map, and a network of external cameras and radar sensors to maintain control of the vehicle’s steering, speed, and following distance on compatible roads. The GPS system uses real-time corrections and map data to determine the vehicle’s exact position, while the lane-sensing camera detects marked lanes to help the vehicle automatically steer and stay centered.

A critical part of the system is the driver attention monitor. An infrared camera mounted on the steering column tracks the driver’s eye position and head movement to confirm they remain focused on the road ahead. If the system detects that the driver has looked away for too long, it issues a series of visual and audible alerts prompting the driver to refocus. Super Cruise will not engage at all if the system cannot confirm an attentive driver.

Super Cruise operates on a network of more than 600,000 miles of compatible roads across the United States and Canada, the largest hands-free driving network offered by any manufacturer, roughly four times the compatible mileage of competing systems. The network continues to expand over time through over-the-air map updates delivered via Chevrolet Connected Services.

Super Cruise is built for divided highways and is not designed for city streets, intersections, or most rural roads. The system automatically activates only when road conditions and GPS data confirm a compatible stretch of highway, and a white Super Cruise icon will appear on the instrument cluster to let the driver know it is available.

Finance Application

Beyond basic hands-free steering and speed management, Super Cruise includes Automatic Lane Change, which detects a slower vehicle ahead and changes lanes, passes, and returns to the original lane without driver input on properly equipped vehicles. Lane Change on Demand lets the driver simply tap the turn signal to prompt a hands-free lane change once the system confirms it is safe.

One capability that sets Chevrolet’s system apart is Super Cruise with Trailering, available on select Silverado and SUV models. When the vehicle’s trailering system is activated, Super Cruise recognizes the connected trailer and automatically extends the following distance to the vehicle ahead, providing extra stopping room. No other competing hands-free driving system currently offers this towing capability.
